Jordan Ivanov is a Bulgarian-American abstract painter and sculptor based in New Orleans, known for work that feels both grounded and experimental. Classically trained at the National Academy of Art in Sofia (MFA, 1993), he carries a strong foundation in drawing, composition, and traditional technique—then deliberately pushes beyond it with modern materials, bold surfaces, and contemporary abstraction.

In his studio practice, Ivanov is recognized for versatility across painting and sculpture, often blending mixed media with industrial elements to create tactile depth and striking texture. Steel, oxidized iron, and weathered finishes become part of his visual language, adding patina, grit, and a sense of time to the work. His sculptures frequently distill the human form into minimalist, elongated silhouettes—gestural figures that balance softness and strength through the contrast of clean contours and rugged, aged metal surfaces. In painting, he builds layered, atmospheric compositions that can read like “space-scapes”—philosophical, meditative fields where color, motion, and texture invite contemplation. Across mediums, his style merges abstract expression with subtle hints of figurative presence, resulting in art that is contemporary in feel while still rooted in classical principles.

Deeply connected to his adopted home, Ivanov has been a key production artist for New Orleans’ Mardi Gras since 2003, contributing to the city’s iconic visual culture through large-scale, high-energy creative work. Beyond Mardi Gras, he has exhibited widely—participating in more than 40 solo and group exhibitions across the United States and internationally, with showings in major art centers as well as abroad. His artistic footprint also extends into the public realm through murals and large-scale sculptures installed in urban spaces, bringing his abstract vision into everyday life.

At the heart of Ivanov’s work is an emotional and introspective aim: to create pieces that resonate personally with the viewer. His art encourages interpretation rather than instruction—inviting audiences to slow down, feel, and find their own meaning within the layers. Shaped by both European heritage and the cultural intensity of New Orleans, Ivanov’s work bridges worlds: refined and raw, classical and industrial, intimate and monumental. Collected privately and appreciated across borders, his practice reflects a sustained commitment to innovation, material exploration, and the belief that abstract art can speak directly to the inner self.
