Description
“Red Witness” is part of Jordan Ivanov’s Faces of the Unspoken series, a collection centered on the human face as a landscape of memory, perception, and concealed emotion.
In this forceful composition, a large central eye dominates the canvas. Surrounded by a pale, crown-like form, it appears watchful, symbolic, and almost detached from the fragmented red face beneath it. A second, smaller eye enters from the edge of the composition, intensifying the feeling of observation and psychological tension.
Ivanov uses thick black contours to divide the surface into irregular shapes, while the tactile application of red and gold-toned pigment gives the painting a raw, sculptural quality. The facial features are recognizable but intentionally disrupted. Rather than presenting a conventional portrait, Ivanov transforms the face into an emotional structure—part mask, part memory, and part inner vision.
The ornate frame creates an additional visual tension. Its traditional decorative character surrounds an image that is immediate, unconventional, and contemporary, emphasizing Ivanov’s ability to bring classical sensibility and experimental expression into the same work.
Jordan Ivanov is a Bulgarian-American abstract painter and sculptor based in New Orleans. He received his MFA from the National Academy of Art in Sofia in 1993, establishing a strong foundation in drawing, composition, and traditional technique before expanding into contemporary abstraction and mixed-media practice.
Across painting and sculpture, Ivanov is known for combining expressive surfaces with industrial and unconventional materials. His work frequently explores texture, patina, fragmentation, and the suggestion of the human figure. Since 2003, he has also contributed to New Orleans’ visual culture as a production artist for Mardi Gras, applying his skills to the creation of large-scale, high-energy parade environments.
Ivanov has participated in more than 40 solo and group exhibitions in the United States and internationally. His paintings, sculptures, murals, and public installations reflect the meeting of his European artistic training and the vibrant cultural intensity of New Orleans.
At the center of his practice is a desire to create work that communicates emotionally without prescribing a single interpretation. “Red Witness” embodies that approach: confrontational yet introspective, immediate yet mysterious, and open to the individual experience of the viewer.
